How You Can Help...

Because of the nature of our work- in taking the doggy misfits of society, most rejected by, or from, other rescues, we work mostly outside of the public eye. They are dogs suffering from neglect, abuse and trauma, behavioural issues, acute or chronic health problems or just the ancient.

"Many of the dogs we take will be with us for a very long time, sometimes for life. They rarely come with funding from those giving up on them."

We have to provide a stimulating and safe environment for them, look after their physical and emotional needs, sometimes this involves costly medical and surgical solutions. We also need to provide opportunities for them to develop their characters, work through their issues and hopefully go on to new homes in due course. For those that cannot be rehomed, we need to provide a safe and stimulating home, sometimes for many years.

This sadly boils down to money. We don’t receive pay, we work for the love of these special dogs.

You can help in various ways, but the most pressing are by raising money and or donating towards our vet bills, and maintenance costs. Lizzie’s Barn Sanctuary has been standing for over 16 years, we fight flooding on a regular basis, and this has taken its toll. We need to do remedial works and maintenance.

Voluntary Work

There are limited opportunities for volunteers at the Sanctuary due to the nature of the dogs, but there are sometimes opportunities for regular dog walkers.

Tradesmen, handy folk who can help us with regular maintenance and repairs.

Words from Gareth...

There are very few places that I have been where I find myself surrounded by happiness.  Lizzie's Barn Sanctuary is one of those few places. The happiness could be due to the 10 acres the dogs have as an exercise area, or that they are encouraged to jump in near by rivers or roll in the mud at every opportunity they get.   Most likely though would be becuase they are all treated with equal care and consideration.  Each dog that passes through Lizzie's Barn will be cared for and supported for the entirety of their lives, both for the dogs who are re-homed and the dogs that stay at the sanctuary.

One of the things that sets Lizzie's Barn apart is the positive message that they spread.  Fionna (Founder of Lizzie's Barn) chooses to show how happy the animals are and celebrates the good nature of her dogs over their disabilities or defects.  Using this method she has reached a community of dog lovers and supporters encouraging all manner of activities from jumble sales to knitted dog jumpers.

It was inevitable that humans and dogs would willingly co-exist.  Being both pack hunters it was of mutual benefit for both species, a benefit that has now led to generations of companionship.  Maybe the happiness that surrounded me at Lizzie's Barn was not just the environment that the dogs were living in but the nature of the dogs themselves.  Dogs are ever present, forgiving and compassionate within their pack.  Maybe happiness is reached when you have found your pack and are content with your position within it.
